Whether you are traveling long or short distances to celebrate with family and friends, remember that holiday driving can be treacherous. The week of Thanksgiving is particularly dangerous as it is always one of the busiest weeks of the year for travel. There are steps, however, that you can take to keep yourself and others safe from Oklahoma car accidents this holiday.

If you are driving to and from Thanksgiving parties, do not drink. It only takes a couple glasses of wine to affect your cognitive and physical abilities. If you feel the slightest buzz from alcohol, you are not safe to drive. Similarly, if you notice a vehicle in front of you that is swerving, drifting, or moving erratically, keep your distance and call the authorities.

If you are planning on doing long-distance driving this Thanksgiving, check your tire pressure and brakes before you leave. Map out a couple of routes for your trip and have someone serve as your navigator. Remember to pull over every couple of hours and to let someone else drive if you begin to feel tired. If you find yourself losing focus, pull over. Take a break if your eyes begin to feel heavy or if you are letting your vehicle drift from the center of the lane. This holiday week is a good time to practice defensive driving habits, so keep plenty of space between yourself and the vehicles in front of you.

Every Thanksgiving, there is an increase in traffic accidents because of the number of motorists on the highways. The experienced Oklahoma personal injury lawyers at Maples Law Firm hope you and your family stay safe this holiday.
