A police officer writes a ticket beside a stopped SUV and police motorcycle on the roadside.

Speeding poses a serious risk on U.S. roads, according to studies by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). In 2010, 10,395 people lost their lives in speeding-related crashes. That is about one-third of all people who died in car accidents.

When drivers speed, they reduce the ability to stop suddenly and avoid collisions with other drivers, bicyclists, or pedestrians. Also, as speed increases, the crash force increases. According to the IIHS, if a crash speed increases from 40 to 60 miles per hour, the force with which the two vehicles collide increases by 125 percent.

Some facts about speeding:

  • Speeding is involved in 33% of all fatal accidents (killing over 10,000 people each year)
  • Speeding is the third most common reason for all car crashes
  • More than 20% of crash deaths happen on roads with a posted limit of 35 mph or less
  • Almost 40% of male drivers under 20 who died in accidents were speeding at the time of the crash
  • Nearly half of all speeding tickets are written in areas with limits of 50 mph or less
