Oklahoma Head-On Crash Results in 7 Fatalities

By Ray Maples on October 3, 2012

At least seven people were killed in an Oklahoma car accident involving a head-on collision. According to The Associated Press, the fatal crash occurred along Highway 412 near Elmwood in the Oklahoma Panhandle. Officials say a speeding Chevrolet Suburban crossed the centerline and crashed into a van carrying at least seven workers on their way to a Texas meatpacking plant. Both drivers and five passengers in the van were killed. It is unclear what caused the Suburban to cross into oncoming traffic.

Many of the most devastating crashes involve head-on collisions. According to Oklahoma Statute 11-311: “Whenever any highway has been divided into two or more roadways by leaving an intervening space or by a physical barrier or clearly indicated dividing section so constructed as to impede vehicular traffic, every vehicle shall be driven only upon the right-hand roadway unless directed or permitted to use another roadway by official traffic control devices or peace officers.”

By Ray Maples on September 17, 2012

A 33-year-old Oklahoma City woman was killed in a Jefferson County car accident when the vehicle in which she was a passenger rolled nearly two times. According to The Capital-Journal, the fatal car crash occurred on the westbound US-24 highway east of the junction with K-4 highway east of Topeka. Officials say both vehicles were traveling west when one of them struck the passenger side of the other. The fatally injured victim was in the car that rolled over as a result of the collision. The other occupants, who were also from Oklahoma City, were wearing seatbelts and appeared to be uninjured. The 67-year-old driver of the other vehicle was not injured. It is not clear if she will be cited for the fatal collision.

Many highway collisions result from a failure to maintain a lane of traffic. Under Oklahoma Statute 47: 11-309: “A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practicable entirely within a single lane … A vehicle shall not be moved from the lane until the driver has first ascertained that the movement can be made with safety and then given a signal, not less than the last one hundred (100) feet traveled by the vehicle, of his intention to change lanes.”

Oklahoma Rollover Accident Claims the Lives of Two People

By Ray Maples on July 10, 2012

Two people were killed in an Oklahoma rollover accident in which several people were ejected. According to a news report in The Purcell Register, the fatal car crash occurred on state Highway 74 north of the Garvin-McClain County line. Officials say a 2000 Chevrolet pickup drifted off the roadway before the 20-year-old male driver over-corrected, causing the vehicle to roll over multiple times. The driver and a 19-year-old male passenger were fatally injured in the rollover. A 24-year-old female passenger survived the crash with serious injuries. According to the report, all three occupants were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

There are a number of questions that must be asked following a rollover accident involving passenger ejections. What caused the vehicle to roll over? Did the top-heavy design of the vehicle contribute to the crash? Did a hazardous roadway condition, such as a dangerous shoulder or large pothole, cause the vehicle to veer out of control? Was the driver speeding, distracted, or fatigued at the time of the crash? Were the occupants wearing seatbelts that failed to work properly during the rollover? Were other vehicles or drivers involved?
