IKEA Recalls Bed Canopies for Strangulation Hazard

Since August 1996, IKEA has sold millions of bed canopies worldwide that are designed to hang over children as they sleep. If you are one of the hundreds of thousands of families in the United States who have a bed canopy from IKEA, the Consumer Products Safety Commission is recommending that you stop using it immediately. In fact, IKEA has announced a massive recall of about 255,000 bed canopies in the United States and 2.6 million worldwide over strangulation concerns.

Officials say the recall is related to nine reports of children getting entangled in their bed canopies. In one incident, a 7-month-old girl pulled the fabric into her crib and wrapped it around her neck numerous times. Consumers should return these dangerous products to an IKEA store right away for a full refund.

There is a lot of money spent on putting child products on the shelves but a lot less spent on testing these products. Many dangerous and defective child products get past regulators and end up in our homes or worse, in our children’s nurseries. It is important for consumers to report these products and for officials to look into whether or not they are safe for our kids.

There are many types of defective products that can harm newborns and children. For example, poorly designed and manufactured cribs result in preventable fatalities each year. Defective sling carriers and car seats can be extremely dangerous as well. Poorly designed toys may pose a choking hazard and cheaply made products may contain lead or other dangerous substances.

It is unthinkable that companies would put profit over the safety of children, but it occurs all the time. If a dangerous product has injured your child, do not hesitate to take your child to the hospital and research your legal options.
