Psychosis is an abnormal condition of the mind that is commonly defined as a loss of contact with reality. This is a very serious medical condition that can prove dangerous if not properly treated and diagnosed. Psychotic behavior that results from an illness such as schizophrenia can lead to violent outbursts. This is why Oklahoma nursing homes must ensure that the residents who are exhibiting psychotic behavior are properly treated with antipsychotic medications.

Unfortunately, many long-term care facilities and caregivers are using powerful antipsychotic medications when they are not necessary. Antipsychotic drugs are strong enough to sedate a patient for a long period of time. So, it is common for Oklahoma nursing homes that are understaffed to use them for the wrong reasons — to lessen their workload. This is an egregious form of elder abuse that can have devastating consequences.

According to Consumer Voice, about 26 percent of all nursing home residents in the United States are given antipsychotic medications. Many of these patients have never been diagnosed with any illnesses that require these drugs. Others have medical conditions that make it unsafe to take antipsychotics. For example, nearly 40 percent of patients suffering from dementia are given antipsychotic drugs despite warnings from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that patients who are suffering from dementia are at risk of medical complications or death if given antipsychotics.

Some of the most common side effects of antipsychotic medications include:

  • Loss of independence
  • Over-sedation
  • Increased respiratory infections
  • Falls
  • Strokes
  • Impotence
  • Lethargy
  • Seizures
  • Tremors
  • Nightmares

These types of side effects are only worth the risk if the patient is suffering from serious mental issues such as delusions, disordered thoughts, or hallucinations. If you worry that your loved one is being prescribed unnecessary drugs, it might be in your best interest to discuss your concerns with an experienced Oklahoma nursing home lawyer who will fight for victims’ rights and help hold negligent care facilities accountable.
