Secret Stories about the Great State of Oklahoma

By Attorney Ray Maples on January 23, 2014

Oklahoma’s known for its sprawling prairies, mesas, woods, and mountain ranges. The Sooner State’s also known for its considerable role in the production of oil, natural gas, and agriculture. If you’re a sports fan, you probably have heard of the Oklahoma City Thunder, arguably the current best professional basketball team in the Western Conference. But what do you really know about Oklahoma, and really, what is there to know?

Plenty, in fact.

You can thank Oklahoma City for bringing parking meters into this world, or more specifically, one of its former citizens, Carl C. Magee. Back in 1935, he came up with the brilliant idea of a “coin controlled parking meter” and patented the idea. The first parking meter was installed in his native city only a few months later. Today, parking meters can be found in most metropolitan areas, giving headaches to frustrated motorists all across the nation. What a legacy.

If you want a story that’s a bit more fantastical than parking meters, then get ready for this next one.

Some time ago, a tornado struck Ponca City and carried away the home in which a man and his wife resided. The roof and walls of the home did not withstand the tornado, but somehow, the floor remained unbroken. Eventually, the tornado settled and placed the floor along with the couple gently back on the ground.

Here’s one last story that may not excite your mind, but it’ll surely excite your stomach.

A little-known town called Okmulgee is actually very accomplished. They hold the world record for the largest pecan pie, pecan brownie, and pecan cookie. If that weren’t enough, Okmulgee also throws the biggest ice cream and cookie parties. Now why isn’t this town considered a national treasure? Surely there must be an explanation.

L. Ray Maples II and his associates at the Maples Law Firm hope you enjoyed these bite-sized tidbits about the great state of Oklahoma.
