The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and several automakers recently announced a recall that will affect over 2.1 million vehicles, according to an article in the Detroit Free Press<\/em>. The recall covers vehicles in model years 2002, 2003, and 2004, including the Jeep Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Liberty; the Dodge Viper; the Toyota Corolla, Matrix, and Avalon; the Pontiac Vibe; the Honda Odyssey; and the Acura MDX. All these vehicles share an air bag system component that may be faulty, causing the bag to deploy at the wrong times or to deploy too forcefully. In some cases, deploying air bags have ruptured, causing injuries.<\/p>\n

Some of the vehicles covered by the new recall were the subject of an earlier recall for a similar problem, according to the NHTSA. However, the previous recall may not have fixed the problem. The NHTSA has received reports of 93 cases in which a previously-repaired vehicle\u2019s air bag still malfunctioned. In nine of these cases, the air bag ruptured, causing injuries to three different people.<\/p>\n

So far, the NHTSA estimates, as many as six deaths may have been caused by the defective air bag systems.<\/p>\n
