Honda Motor Co. recently agreed to pay fines totaling $70 million dollars in the United States after an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed that the automaker had failed to meet its obligations under the federal Early Warning Reporting System, according to an article in the Huffington Post<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A NHTSA investigation began looking into Honda\u2019s reports to the Early Warning Reporting System, which collects information about vehicle damage, warranty claims, injuries, and deaths that may point to a hidden vehicle defect or other serious problem.\u00a0 The system provides information to support vehicle recalls and to inform the public, making it a key part of the work of many experienced Oklahoma car accident lawyers<\/a>.\u00a0 Automakers are obligated to report certain events to the system in order to aid in tracking.<\/p>\n

In November, Honda revealed that the company had failed to report over 1,700 injuries and deaths in the previous decade.\u00a0Eight of these incidents involved the defective Tanaka Corp air bags that have become the subject of their own NHTSA investigation and recall.\u00a0 As a result of the failures, Honda agreed to pay the federal government two separate fines of $35 million each.<\/p>\n

The company has also agreed to make several internal changes in order to prevent similar failures from happening again.\u00a0Blaming data entry and computer errors, Honda said it would look into these systems, as well as improve training and oversight for its staff in order to bring the company into compliance with federal reporting regulations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
